Vijayawada: Vaddera Sangham leaders met chief minister Chandrababu Naidu at his camp office here on Thursday with a request to include them in the Scheduled Tribes (ST) category.
The leaders quoted the CM as having positively responded to their plea. They said the community with a population of 40 lakh is facing deprivation in education, employment and in terms of social status also.
Though Vadderas enjoy BC status, they were subjected to denial of opportunities in view of their inability to compete with others figuring in the BC lists, they said. The leaders recalled that the community enjoyed ST status in the states like Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Kerala and Karnataka.
Expressing happiness over appointment of Devara Murali as Vaddera Federation chairman, the community leaders urged the government to earmark sufficient funds for the federation so as to ensure the welfare of Vadderas.
